Summary
We support witnesses who are attending court to give evidence by explaining the trial processes and providing emotional supportDetailed description
Our volunteers ensure witnesses feel more confident when giving their best evidence. We are completely impartial and this role does not require any legal or court knowledge. Full training and support is provided, plus expenses. Excellent insight into the criminal justice system, making a contribution to the community and learning new skills. We are looking for friendly, empathetic volunteers who have some free time in the week.
Yeovil Magistrates is open for trials Mondays and Thursdays, so one of these days would need to be free.
Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and we particularly welcome applications from people with physical or mental health conditions, and people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) and LGBT+ communities. We are committed to offering a welcoming and inclusive environment to witnesses, staff, and volunteers
Look forward to hearing from you!

The Witness Service provides free, confidential practical and emotional support for witnesses attending trials and hearings in every criminal court in England and Wales. We’re delivered by Citizens Advice, and funded by a grant from the Ministry of Justice. Our 300 staff and 2,000 volunteers supported more than 87,000 witnesses in 2021/22.
Our trained volunteers provide practical help, emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court.
We're a national service that operates at a local level, with staff and volunteer teams working from every Crown and Magistrates court in England and Wales. In Somerset, we operate from Taunton Crown Court, Taunton Magistrates Court and Yeovil Magistrates Court.
