About National Trust Stourhead House & Garden

The National Trust is a registered charity independent of Government.

We protect and open to the public over 300 historic houses and gardens and 49 industrial monuments and mills.

But it doesn’t stop there. We also look after forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, downs, moorland, islands, archaeological remains, castles, nature reserves, villages – for places, for ever, for everyone.

Stourhead’s world-famous landscape garden, described as a ‘living work of art’ when it opened over 250 years ago, surrounds a stunningly beautiful lake. Stourhead House was one of the first in the country to showcase Palladian architecture. The house and gardens are enjoyed by over 400,000 visitors each year and is supported a team of more than 500 volunteers.

We rely for income on membership fees, donations and legacies, and money raised from our commercial operations. We are supported by 4 million members and 60,000 volunteers without whom we simply could not manage.
