The Witness Service provides practical and emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed about court processes

Detailed description

The role is court based and will involve providing support to witnesses, and their supporters, by explaining the court procedures and legal terminology, showing them around the courtroom before trial and sitting in the courtroom with them, when permitted.

Our volunteers ensure witnesses feel more confident when giving their best evidence. We are completely impartial and this role does not require any legal or court knowledge. Full training and support is provided, plus expenses. Excellent insight into the criminal justice system, making a contribution to the community and learning new skills. We are looking for friendly, empathetic volunteers who have some free time in the week.

We are looking for volunteers who are free one day in the week 9-5.

Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and we particularly welcome applications from people with physical or mental health conditions, and people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) and LGBT+ communities. About Citizens Advice Witness Service

Citizens Advice is a national charity that provides free-to-access information and advice to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find their way forward.

The Witness Service provides free, confidential practical and emotional support for witnesses attending trials and hearings in every criminal court in England and Wales. We’re delivered by Citizens Advice, and funded by a grant from the Ministry of Justice. Our 300 staff and 2,000 volunteers supported more than 87,000 witnesses in 2021/22.

Our trained volunteers provide practical help, emotional support and information to witnesses so that they feel valued, respected and informed and able to give their best evidence in court.

We're a national service that operates at a local level, with staff and volunteer teams working from every Crown and Magistrates court in England and Wales. In Somerset, we operate from Taunton Crown Court, Taunton Magistrates Court and Yeovil Magistrates Court.
