Summary
Nature Recovery Volunteers meet regularly to carry out a wide range of tasks with the Mendip Hills National Landscape.Detailed description
The Mendip Hills are one of England’s most special places – the limestone Mendip Hills with the lakes of the Chew Valley is a stunning landscape of steep slopes and undulating plateau punctuated by spectacular gorges and rocky outcrops. On the hilltops there are hundreds of ancient monuments, whilst on steeper slopes flower rich grasslands and wooded combes offer varied habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.
In recognition of its special qualities the area has been designated as a National Landscape, these protected landscapes are managed through local Partnerships on behalf of the nation.
The National Landscapes have dedicated teams who work to conserve and enhance the landscapes, natural and cultural heritage of these wonderful areas. Volunteering with these teams is a great opportunity to explore the outdoors and because of the wide range of roles there is something for everyone to get involved with.
Nature Recovery Volunteers meet regularly to carry out a wide range of tasks with the Mendip Hills. Volunteers help conserve, enhance and maintain the special qualities of the landscape by assisting the staff and Volunteer Ranger team with the practical management of nature reserves through varied management tasks.
Task days are led by a staff member or experienced Volunteer Ranger. Full training and health and safety will be provided for each task. You will be working as part of a fantastic team of volunteers of diverse backgrounds who come together to work towards enhancing the National Landscape.
These tasks are focused on preserving, protecting and enhancing the special qualities of the Mendip Hills National Landscape. They may include coppicing, scrub clearance, habitat management and general site maintenance. Sessions currently run every other Wednesday, 10am-3pm, however there may be other days in the future. We expect each volunteer to dress for the weather; wearing layers is the best way to be prepared. Wear something you don’t mind getting messy and stout footwear or wellies. All activities are outdoors so please bring a drink and a packed lunch. We provide all tools, personal protection equipment such as gloves and hard hats and refreshments, of course including biscuits.
