Summary

Providing one-to-one telephone support to patients and their close family members, mindful that the role is to provide support, not counselling.

Detailed description

  • Actively listen and empathically help explore thoughts and feelings around the emotional, physical and practical issues surrounding a palliative diagnosis
  • Introduce discussions around planning ahead, helping individuals consider what is important by identifying their wishes
  • Work within boundaries to ensure safety of yourself and those you support
  • Provide a summary of each call using an agreed e-mail format
  • Alert the Supportive Care Co-ordinator should support move beyond the remit of the volunteer role and/or any difficulties experienced during a call
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with St Margaret’s confidentiality policy
  • Actively participate in team meetings, training and supervision.
