About Transition Minehead and Alcombe

"Transition Minehead and Alcombe is a voluntary, community-let group started in 2008. TMA encourages participation and action by local people that can help make our community more resilient to rising energy costs and the effects of climate change.

As part of the international Transition Movement each transition town looks at the goods and services it needs; in particular food, energy health, shelter, general well being and takes positive steps to meet more of its needs locally, reducing the use of transport and energy. So the community becomes less dependent on oil and fossil fuels, more energy efficient and more self-reliant generally and enjoys a confident, thriving local economy.
In Minehead and Alcombe we aim to work with everyone - residents, businesses, public bodies, community organisations, churches and schools - so that we can come up with the most innovative, effective and practical ideas to meet the changing needs of our community and have the energy and skills to carry them out. We rely on volunteers to take forward the projects.

TMA currently has a number of themed working groups looking at key issues highlighted by public consultation. The groups are currently: health and wellbeing, good and growing, transport, waste and recycling, energy, local economy, arts and creativity. Project ideas are being developed for further action.

Projects that are being delivered including Friends and Family Community Allotment, where local families are growing their own produce on a shared allotment being made by TMA volunteers. This project is being done in partnership with West Somerset Healthy Communities and the Living Well programme.

TMA has also organised a Seed Swap and Plant Swap, talks and film showings and has helped run a Freecycle picnic with the local Freecycle group."
